Does Amdocs (NASDAQ:DOX) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?

Amdocs(納斯達克股票代碼:DOX)的資產負債表是否良好?

Some say volatility, rather than debt, is the best way to think about risk as an investor, but Warren Buffett famously said that 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. We note that Amdocs Limited (NASDAQ:DOX) does have debt on its balance sheet. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?

我們注意到,Amdocs Limited(納斯達克股票代碼:DOX)的資產負債表上確實有債務。

When Is Debt A Problem?

Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. While that is not too common, we often do see indebted companies permanently diluting shareholders because lenders force them to raise capital at a distressed price. Having said that, the most common situation is where a company manages its debt reasonably well - and to its own advantage. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

A Look At Amdocs' Liabilities

According to the last reported balance sheet, Amdocs had liabilities of US$1.44b due within 12 months, and liabilities of US$1.43b due beyond 12 months. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of US$600.9m as well as receivables valued at US$1.03b due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling US$1.24b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.

Given Amdocs has a humongous market capitalization of US$10.2b, it's hard to believe these liabilities pose much threat. Having said that, it's clear that we should continue to monitor its balance sheet, lest it change for the worse. But either way, Amdocs has virtually no net debt, so it's fair to say it does not have a heavy debt load!

We use two main ratios to inform us about debt levels relative to earnings. The first is net debt divided by earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), while the second is how many times its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) covers its interest expense (or its interest cover, for short). The advantage of this approach is that we take into account both the absolute quantum of debt (with net debt to EBITDA) and the actual interest expenses associated with that debt (with its interest cover ratio).

Amdocs has very little debt (net of cash), and boasts a debt to EBITDA ratio of 0.049 and EBIT of 61.6 times the interest expense. So relative to past earnings, the debt load seems trivial. The good news is that Amdocs has increased its EBIT by 8.1% over twelve months, which should ease any concerns about debt repayment. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if Amdocs can strengthen its balance sheet over time. So if you want to see what the professionals think, you might find this free report on analyst profit forecasts to be interesting.

Finally, while the tax-man may adore accounting profits, lenders only accept cold hard cash. So we always check how much of that EBIT is translated into free cash flow. Over the last three years, Amdocs recorded free cash flow worth a fulsome 84% of its EBIT, which is stronger than we'd usually expect. That puts it in a very strong position to pay down debt.

Our View

Amdocs's interest cover suggests it can handle its debt as easily as Cristiano Ronaldo could score a goal against an under 14's goalkeeper. And the good news does not stop there, as its conversion of EBIT to free cash flow also supports that impression! Zooming out, Amdocs seems to use debt quite reasonably; and that gets the nod from us. While debt does bring risk, when used wisely it can also bring a higher return on equity. Above most other metrics, we think its important to track how fast earnings per share is growing, if at all. If you've also come to that realization, you're in luck, because today you can view this interactive graph of Amdocs's earnings per share history for free.
