UnitedHealth Group (NYSE:UNH) announced that the company advanced more than $3.3B to healthcare providers affected by the recent cyberattack on its Change Healthcare unit, a significant increase from the $2B it had advanced as of early last week.
Updating on its response to the incident on Wednesday, the managed care company said over 40% of those funds went to safety net hospitals and federally qualified health centers catering to patients with the highest risk.
The cyberattack caused significant disruption across the U.S. healthcare system in February as Change Healthcare, which UnitedHealth (UNH) acquired in 2022 for $13B, was responsible for processing about 50% of the nation’s medical claims.
Late last week, the company said it would begin to clear a backlog of more than $14B in medical claims as critical software applications affected by the cyberattack came back online.
