Private companies account for 51% of IsoEnergy Ltd.'s (CVE:ISO) ownership, while individual investors account for 38%

If you want to know who really controls IsoEnergy Ltd. (CVE:ISO), then you'll have to look at the makeup of its share registry. The group holding the most number of shares in the company, around 51% to be precise, is private companies. That is, the group stands to benefit the most if the stock rises (or lose the most if there is a downturn).

Individual investors, on the other hand, account for 38% of the company's stockholders.

In the chart below, we zoom in on the different ownership groups of IsoEnergy.

What Does The Institutional Ownership Tell Us About IsoEnergy?

Institutions typically measure themselves against a benchmark when reporting to their own investors, so they often become more enthusiastic about a stock once it's included in a major index. We would expect most companies to have some institutions on the register, especially if they are growing.

As you can see, institutional investors have a fair amount of stake in IsoEnergy. This implies the analysts working for those institutions have looked at the stock and they like it. But just like anyone else, they could be wrong. If multiple institutions change their view on a stock at the same time, you could see the share price drop fast. It's therefore worth looking at IsoEnergy's earnings history below. Of course, the future is what really matters.

Hedge funds don't have many shares in IsoEnergy. Looking at our data, we can see that the largest shareholder is Tigers Realm Group with 51% of shares outstanding. With such a huge stake in the ownership, we infer that they have significant control of the future of the company. Sprott Asset Management LP is the second largest shareholder owning 4.7% of common stock, and Mirae Asset Global Investments Co., Ltd holds about 2.6% of the company stock.

While it makes sense to study institutional ownership data for a company, it also makes sense to study analyst sentiments to know which way the wind is blowing. There is a little analyst coverage of the stock, but not much. So there is room for it to gain more coverage.

Insider Ownership Of IsoEnergy

The definition of company insiders can be subjective and does vary between jurisdictions. Our data reflects individual insiders, capturing board members at the very least. Company management run the business, but the CEO will answer to the board, even if he or she is a member of it.

Most consider insider ownership a positive because it can indicate the board is well aligned with other shareholders. However, on some occasions too much power is concentrated within this group.

Our information suggests that IsoEnergy Ltd. insiders own under 1% of the company. But they may have an indirect interest through a corporate structure that we haven't picked up on. It appears that the board holds about CA$1.4m worth of stock. This compares to a market capitalization of CA$325m. We generally like to see a board more invested. However it might be worth checking if those insiders have been buying.

General Public Ownership

The general public, who are usually individual investors, hold a 38% stake in IsoEnergy. This size of ownership, while considerable, may not be enough to change company policy if the decision is not in sync with other large shareholders.

Private Company Ownership

We can see that Private Companies own 51%, of the shares on issue. It's hard to draw any conclusions from this fact alone, so its worth looking into who owns those private companies. Sometimes insiders or other related parties have an interest in shares in a public company through a separate private company.

Next Steps:

I find it very interesting to look at who exactly owns a company. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for IsoEnergy (of which 1 is concerning!) you should know about.
