The Progressive Corporation (NYSE:PGR) insiders sold US$4.8m worth of stock suggesting impending weakness.
In the last year, many The Progressive Corporation (NYSE:PGR) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Progressive Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
The insider, M. Charney, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$1.4m worth of shares at a price of US$95.89 each. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$118, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 20% of M. Charney's holding.

Insider Ownership Of Progressive
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It's great to see that Progressive insiders own 0.3% of the company, worth about US$220m. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
So What Does This Data Suggest About Progressive Insiders?
It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Progressive shares in the last quarter. It's great to see high levels of insider ownership, but looking back over the last year, we don't gain confidence from the Progressive insiders selling. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for Progressive you should be aware of.
Of course, you might find a fantastic investment by looking elsewhere. So take a peek at this free list of interesting companies.
