Southeast Asian ride-hailing giant Grab said on Friday that it would launch an online supermarket in the Philippines to further expand its business beyond ride-hailing and food delivery to increase revenue.
Consumers in Metro Manila, which has a population of more than 13 million, will be able to order vegetables, meat, seafood and other groceries through the Grab app for delivery the next day, the company said.
Grab has already launched online supermarket services in Malaysia and Singapore and is preparing to enter Thailand this year. The company is trying to seize broader opportunities in the food service market to drive user growth. The online grocery market in Southeast Asia is expected to nearly triple from $4.1 billion in 2020 to $11.9 billion in 2025, according to Euromonitor International. Online food delivery in the region is also expected to triple to $28 billion by 2025.
