For JCP&L customers, electric supply prices will increase sharply on June 1.

Here's why:

You have two charges that appear on your electric bill: the supply charge for the cost of the actual electricity you use and a charge from JCP&L for delivering electricity to your home. For the supply charge, you can shop and choose a third-party energy supplier who may be able to offer the best price for electricity. If you do not select an alternate supplier, JCP&L is required to purchase electricity for you and provides it to you at the same cost we've paid for it. This is called Basic Generation Service (BGS).

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) recently announced the results of the auction used to set the BGS price for all electric distribution companies in New Jersey. Based on the results of this BGS auction, a typical JCP&L customer using 777 kWh/month can expect to see their total bill increase by 19.9% beginning June 1. While supply increases are likely for all customers, the difference in the amount you will pay depends on several factors, including your current energy use, future use, whether you've chosen a competitive energy supplier and if you're enrolled in any programs, including budget billing.

The upcoming price increases are driven by market conditions, including lower supply and higher demand, that are impacting all electric supply rates across our region. JCP&L does not generate electricity or control supply prices; we deliver electricity to your home and collect any supply costs on behalf of suppliers without a markup.

We understand that rising electricity costs can cause concern, and we're here to help. The following options can help you plan for the upcoming price increases and take control of your energy costs:

Shop for Electricity

While market conditions are impacting all supply prices, you may be able to pay less each month by selecting a competitive supplier who may be able to offer a price lower than the BGS price. Now is a great time to review your options so that you can select a rate or program that works best for you. When choosing a supplier, consider the price, plan structure (fixed or variable rate), contract length, terms and conditions, and any taxes, charges or fees that may apply. Budget Billing

To help keep your bills consistent throughout the year, you can enroll in budget billing, known as the Equal Payment Plan (EPP). The EPP spreads out annual costs across all 12 months to help even out seasonal highs and lows and make your bill more manageable during colder or hotter months when you may use more energy. You can enroll in EPP and calculate your monthly bill amount in your online account at firstenergycorp.com.

Please note that supply costs from a third-party supplier will not be included in your EPP budget plan. If you select a third-party supplier, we encourage you to contact them directly to learn about billing options.
