Equitas Global a charitable organisation that works to promote animal welfare and consumer protection in corporate supply chains said that in its investigation into a key egg supplier to Berjaya Hotels, owned by Berjaya Group, it found serious food safety risks and blatant animal cruelty.

The organisation said footage from Teo Seng Farms, a key egg supplier to Berjaya Hotels, found hens packed so tightly in tiny cages that they had feathers scraped off, injuries, and body deformities including feces covering cage bars and equipment and smeared on the bodies of hens and eggs

"Berjaya Hotels continue to serve their guests eggs from filthy and cruel battery cages that pose a serious risk to
public health," said Dana Taborosi, Campaign Manager at Equitas,

"Most hotel groups in Malaysia have set a timeline for ending the usage of cruel and filthy caged eggs, but Berjaya Hotels seems to think its guests don't deserve the same quality and safety. she added.

The European Food Safety Authority and a dozen international research teams have found that caged egg farms, such as those supplying Berjaya Hotels in Malaysia, have up to a 33 times greater risk of contamination from salmonella strains. Battery cage egg production has been banned and is being phased out in over 30 countries, including the entirety of the European Union, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Canada, India, and parts of the United States.

Over 60% of top hotel groups in Malaysia have set a timeline for using only cage-free eggs in their global supply chain, including Hatten Hotels, Sunway Hotels and Resorts, Ascott Malaysia, Banyan Tree Malaysia, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts Malaysia, Accor, Best Western Hotels and Resorts, Club Med, Dorsett Hospitality International, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, Harilela Hotel, Hilton Hotels and Resorts, Hyatt, IHG Hotels and Resorts, Mandarin Oriental, Marriott, Melia Hotels International, Millennium Hotels and Resorts, Minor Hotels, Radisson, Sino Hotels, and Wyndham Hotels and Resorts.

"We urge Berjaya Hotels and Berjaya Group to catch up with other leading luxury hotel groups in the region and set a timeline for ending the use of cruel, unsafe and unsustainable caged eggs across their supply chain," said Taborosi.
