Don't Ignore The Insider Selling In EQT
Don't Ignore The Insider Selling In EQT
We wouldn't blame EQT Corporation (NYSE:EQT) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Thomas Karam, the Director recently netted about US$2.1m selling shares at an average price of US$44.87. That's a big disposal, and it decreased their holding size by 19%, which is notable but not too bad.
EQT Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In fact, the recent sale by Thomas Karam was the biggest sale of EQT shares made by an insider individual in the last twelve months, according to our records. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$43.33. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign.

Insider Ownership
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. EQT insiders own about US$162m worth of shares (which is 0.6% of the company). Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
So What Does This Data Suggest About EQT Insiders?
An insider sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. And there weren't any purchases to give us comfort, over the last year. It is good to see high insider ownership, but the insider selling leaves us cautious. In addition to knowing about insider transactions going on, it's beneficial to identify the risks facing EQT. For example, EQT has 6 warning signs (and 1 which shouldn't be ignored) we think you should know about.
