It's possible to achieve returns close to the market-weighted average return by buying an index fund. A talented investor can beat the market with a diversified portfolio, but even then, some stocks will under-perform. While the Singapore Airlines Limited (SGX:C6L) share price is down 31% over half a decade, the total return to shareholders (which includes dividends) was 12%. And that total return actually beats the market decline of 7.6%.

So let's have a look and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, Singapore Airlines moved from a loss to profitability. Most would consider that to be a good thing, so it's counter-intuitive to see the share price declining. Other metrics may better explain the share price move.

The steady dividend doesn't really explain why the share price is down. It's not immediately clear to us why the stock price is down but further research might provide some answers.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Singapore Airlines' TSR for the last 5 years was 12%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Singapore Airlines provided a TSR of 14% over the last twelve months. But that return falls short of the market. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 2% per year over five year. It is possible that returns will improve along with the business fundamentals. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. To that end, you should learn about the 2 warning signs we've spotted with Singapore Airlines (including 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) .
