Passive investing in index funds can generate returns that roughly match the overall market. But investors can boost returns by picking market-beating companies to own shares in. To wit, the OceanFirst Financial Corp. (NASDAQ:OCFC) share price is 47% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around 38% (not including dividends) in the same period. If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! Unfortunately the longer term returns are not so good, with the stock falling 17% in the last three years.

In light of the stock dropping 5.2% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive one-year return.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Over the last twelve months, OceanFirst Financial actually shrank its EPS by 18%.

So we don't think that investors are paying too much attention to EPS. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

We haven't seen OceanFirst Financial increase dividend payments yet, so the yield probably hasn't helped drive the share higher. It saw it's revenue decline by 9.2% over twelve months. Usually that correlates with a lower share price, but let's face it, the gyrations of the market are sometimes only as clear as mud.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for OceanFirst Financial the TSR over the last 1 year was 55%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that OceanFirst Financial shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 55% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 1.5% per year over five years. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes.
