Investors Push Trupanion (NASDAQ:TRUP) 8.1% Lower This Week, Company's Increasing Losses Might Be to Blame

投資者推動trupanion(納斯達克:TRUP)本週下跌8.1%,公司不斷增加的虧損可能是原因

If you buy and hold a stock for many years, you'd hope to be making a profit. Furthermore, you'd generally like to see the share price rise faster than the market. But Trupanion, Inc. (NASDAQ:TRUP) has fallen short of that second goal, with a share price rise of 72% over five years, which is below the market return. Some buyers are laughing, though, with an increase of 50% in the last year.

Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 8.1%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

Because Trupanion made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

For the last half decade, Trupanion can boast revenue growth at a rate of 25% per year. Even measured against other revenue-focussed companies, that's a good result. It's nice to see shareholders have made a profit, but the gain of 11% over the period isn't that impressive compared to the overall market. You could argue the market is still pretty skeptical, given the growing revenues. Arguably this falls in a potential sweet spot - modest share price gains but good top line growth over the long term justifies investigation, in our book.

That's better than the annualised return of 11% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently.
