Avis Budget Group's (NASDAQ:CAR) Five-year Total Shareholder Returns Outpace the Underlying Earnings Growth

It hasn't been the best quarter for Avis Budget Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:CAR) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 27% in that time. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been very strong. It's fair to say most would be happy with 233% the gain in that time. So while it's never fun to see a share price fall, it's important to look at a longer time horizon. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it's cheap now. While the long term returns are impressive, we do have some sympathy for those who bought more recently, given the 63% drop, in the last year.

Although Avis Budget Group has shed US$353m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During five years of share price growth, Avis Budget Group achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 54% per year. The EPS growth is more impressive than the yearly share price gain of 27% over the same period. So it seems the market isn't so enthusiastic about the stock these days. This cautious sentiment is reflected in its (fairly low) P/E ratio of 3.69.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We've already covered Avis Budget Group's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Avis Budget Group hasn't been paying dividends, but its TSR of 251% exceeds its share price return of 233%, implying it has either spun-off a business, or raised capital at a discount; thereby providing additional value to shareholders.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 23% in the last year, Avis Budget Group shareholders lost 61%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 29% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. To that end, you should learn about the 3 warning signs we've spotted with Avis Budget Group (including 2 which are potentially serious) .
