Why You Might Be Interested In OneMain Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:OMF) For Its Upcoming Dividend

Simply Wall St ·  08/08 19:00

OneMain Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:OMF) stock is about to trade ex-dividend in three days. The ex-dividend date occurs one day before the record date which is the day on which shareholders need to be on the company's books in order to receive a dividend. The ex-dividend date is important because any transaction on a stock needs to have been settled before the record date in order to be eligible for a dividend. Therefore, if you purchase OneMain Holdings' shares on or after the 12th of August, you won't be eligible to receive the dividend, when it is paid on the 16th of August.

OneMain Holdings,Inc.

The company's next dividend payment will be US$1.04 per share, on the back of last year when the company paid a total of US$4.16 to shareholders. Based on the last year's worth of payments, OneMain Holdings stock has a trailing yield of around 9.3% on the current share price of US$44.91. Dividends are an important source of income to many shareholders, but the health of the business is crucial to maintaining those dividends. We need to see whether the dividend is covered by earnings and if it's growing.

If a company pays out more in dividends than it earned, then the dividend might become unsustainable - hardly an ideal situation. It paid out 83% of its earnings as dividends last year, which is not unreasonable, but limits reinvestment in the business and leaves the dividend vulnerable to a business downturn. We'd be worried about the risk of a drop in earnings.

Companies that pay out less in dividends than they earn in profits generally have more sustainable dividends. The lower the payout ratio, the more wiggle room the business has before it could be forced to cut the dividend.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?

Companies with consistently growing earnings per share generally make the best dividend stocks, as they usually find it easier to grow dividends per share. Investors love dividends, so if earnings fall and the dividend is reduced, expect a stock to be sold off heavily at the same time. This is why it's a relief to see OneMain Holdings earnings per share are up 8.2% per annum over the last five years.

The main way most investors will assess a company's dividend prospects is by checking the historical rate of dividend growth. OneMain Holdings has delivered an average of 33% per year annual increase in its dividend, based on the past five years of dividend payments. It's encouraging to see the company lifting dividends while earnings are growing, suggesting at least some corporate interest in rewarding shareholders.
