The original Resident Evil, the iconic game that launched the survival horror genre into the mainstream, is now available on PC once again.

Thanks to a collaboration between Capcom ADR (OTC:CCOEY) and CD Projekt ADR (OTC:OTGLY) owned storefront GOG, fans can revisit the 1996 classic in its original form for $9.99.

GOG's announcement heralded the return of the game, which has not been available on any digital storefront until now.

"In joint efforts with the original creators Capcom, we're thrilled to announce the re-release of the original Resident Evil, the groundbreaking series that heralded the golden age of the survival horror genre," GOG stated.

"This iconic classic is now available with all its original content intact, featuring quality of life improvements and enhanced compatibility for modern systems. As part of GOG's ongoing effort to protect and preserve classic games, Resident Evil is now available on the DRM-free GOG store."

In addition to the standalone release, GOG announced that Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 will also be joining the lineup sometime in 2024. For enthusiasts eager to collect all three titles, a $24.99 bundle option is available, promising a comprehensive experience of the franchise's early years.

First Time On Digital Platforms Since 1996

Resident Evil initially arrived on PC in 1996 but has been absent from digital platforms until now. Steam, which hosts the remastered version but not the original, is expected to receive the classic version soon. This anticipation was fueled by a listing spotted on the European rating website PEGI.

The re-release marks a significant moment for fans of the series, offering an opportunity to experience the game that started it all. While Capcom has focused on developing new entries in the franchise and remaking older games, the original Resident Evil had been somewhat overlooked.

The series has seen successful remakes of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and the beloved Resident Evil 4, with reports suggesting that remakes of Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil: Code Veronica are in the works, alongside a ninth mainline installment.
