Polestar (NASDAQ: PSNY), the premium electric vehicle (EV) maker owned by Geely and Volvo Cars, has connected to Nio's (NYSE: NIO) charging network in China, becoming the latest EV maker to do so.
Polestar and Nio have interconnected their charging networks, and Polestar customers can now enjoy a wider coverage and more efficient charging experience, the company said today.
Polestar has access to more than 2,200 Nio charging stations, including more than 11,000 charging piles, according to a statement from it.
Polestar users can use Nio's charging piles through their vehicle apps to enjoy services including search, navigation, QR code scanning, and payment, the company said.
Nio has one of the largest charging networks in China. As of June 6, the company had 2,274 supercharging stations in China offering 10,386 charging piles and 1,596 destination charging stations offering 12,231 chargers, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
The company's charging piles are open to all EV users, with more than 80 percent serving non-Nio-branded EVs, it previously said.
Direct partnerships between other car companies and Nio on the charging network can help provide a better charging experience, such as using Nio charging piles directly through those car companies' apps or maps in the in-car screen.
As of May 31, Polestar had 22 supercharging stations in China, covering 17 cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Chongqing and Chengdu, according to the company.
Polestar users mainly rely on third-party facilities to charge their vehicles, and the EV maker has access to nearly 750,000 third-party charging piles.
Polestar is the seventh to announce access to Nio's charging network, after Geely Automobile Holdings, Jiyue, SAIC-GM, Deepal, Hyper, and IM Motors have announced similar moves.
Originally a brand acquired by Volvo Cars in its early years, Polestar became independent with joint funding from Geely and Volvo, focusing on high-end EVs and headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden.
In June 2022, Polestar went public on the NASDAQ through a merger with a SPAC (special purpose acquisition company).
On March 20, Polestar announced access to Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) charging network in China.
