Popular tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee, aka MKBHD, on Friday, released a new video reviewing Lucid Motors' (NASDAQ:LCID) Sapphire variant of its flagship Air sedan and he simply sees no downsides to the car.
What Happened: "If you made me daily drive any EV in the world right now and it couldn't be a Tesla, it would be this," Brownlee said. "It would have to be this, it's just way too good at driving to not pick it." The YouTuber, however, noted that he would personally prefer to wrap it in matte black on top of the car's original Sapphire blue paint.
Drawing a parallel between Lucid's high-end sedan starting at $249,000 and Tesla's Model S Plaid, Brownlee noted that the Lucid is faster in a straight line despite its heavy body which weighs over 5000 lbs. "This car defies physics in a totally honest way," Brownlee said. "It's a rocket ship in a straight line."
As per Brownlee, the Sapphire is one of the best sedans ever made, across fuel types, with top-of-the-class driving dynamics, steering, storage and build quality.
Why It Matters: The Tesla Model S Plaid starts at $87,990 and the Sapphire at nearly three times the price of the Plaid.
However, the Sapphire offers an estimated range of 427 miles, and a maximum power of 1234 hp, as compared to the Plaid's 359 miles range and 1020 hp. The Sapphire can also get from 0 to 60 mph in 1.89 seconds, making it faster in acceleration than the Plaid which takes 1.99 seconds.
In a recent media interview, Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson said that Tesla currently "seems to be distracted" unlike from a decade before, leaving it to Lucid to advance EV technology.
"What I'm seeing now is a worrying trend towards a sort of distraction. Tesla seems to be distracted, there's an interest in social media, even politics, and it's kind of losing its way. I don't see it having that singular sense of purpose, and I think it really falls to Lucid to take the technology to a whole new level now," the CEO said.
Lucid, however, is yet to make a profit, reporting a net loss of over $346,000 for every vehicle it delivered in the first quarter of 2024.
