Summer interns have become the latest victims of Elon Musk's cost cuts.

Just a few weeks before the summer internship began,$Tesla (TSLA.US)$The company is withdrawing the offer of employment.

“At 8:46 a.m., I opened an email from Tesla with flight information. At 11:25 a.m., my internship acceptance was gone,” wrote Joshua Schreiber, a student at the University of Miami. He said that he was going to start his internship in three weeks, and that he had already “spent several thousand on accommodation.”

Schreiber, like many others who would have become Tesla interns, is facing the end of the school year. They say Tesla suddenly called to inform them that the admissions were no longer valid, leaving them with not much time to find an alternative summer job.

In one case, a current Tesla employee posted a post on LinkedIn asking someone in his network to hire an intern who was about to start working at Tesla. “Please turn our losses into yours,” wrote Diana Rosenberg. Her profile shows that she works as a battery supplier at Tesla.

Rosenberg blamed Tesla's ongoing massive layoffs for the decision to cancel intern admissions.

Cancelling intern admissions is unlikely to save Tesla too much money. According to Glassdoor, at least one job is an unpaid job, and paid internships at the car manufacturer usually pay between $18 and $28 an hour.

But these decisions will have an impact on the company's recruitment channels. According to the company's last impact report, more than 3,000 students from universities and community colleges around the world are hired by Tesla as interns each year. “Start doing meaningful work from day one,” the company's intern website reads.
