Possible Bearish Signals With CBIZ Insiders Disposing Stock

Possible Bearish Signals With CBIZ Insiders Disposing Stock

Simply Wall St ·  04/23 19:41

The fact that multiple CBIZ, Inc. (NYSE:CBZ) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At CBIZ

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the insider, Joseph DiMartino, sold US$750k worth of shares at a price of US$50.28 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$76.03, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. It is worth noting that this sale was only 37% of Joseph DiMartino's holding.

Does CBIZ Boast High Insider Ownership?

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. CBIZ insiders own about US$124m worth of shares (which is 3.3% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
