Cryoport (NASDAQ:CYRX Shareholders Incur Further Losses as Stock Declines 6.1% This Week, Taking Three-year Losses to 65%

While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the Cryoport, Inc. (NASDAQ:CYRX) share price has gained 21% in the last three months. Meanwhile over the last three years the stock has dropped hard. Regrettably, the share price slid 65% in that period. So the improvement may be a real relief to some. Perhaps the company has turned over a new leaf.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

Given that Cryoport didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

Over three years, Cryoport grew revenue at 20% per year. That's well above most other pre-profit companies. In contrast, the share price is down 18% compound, over three years - disappointing by most standards. This could mean hype has come out of the stock because the losses are concerning investors. But a share price drop of that magnitude could well signal that the market is overly negative on the stock.

A Different Perspective

Cryoport shareholders are down 14% for the year, but the market itself is up 25%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 6%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. To that end, you should be aware of the 1 warning sign we've spotted with Cryoport .
