AFP, April 15 (Editor Xia Junxiong) On Monday (April 15) local time, American artificial intelligence (AI) research firm OpenAI officially announced the opening of an office in Tokyo, Japan. This is the company's third international office after London and Dublin.
According to a company press release, OpenAI has appointed Tadao Nagasaki (Tadao Nagasaki) as the head of the Japan office, and Tadao Nagasaki previously served as the president of Amazon AWS Japan.
OpenAI promises to provide local companies with a GPT-4 customized large model optimized specifically for Japanese. The model has higher performance in translating and summarizing Japanese text, runs 3 times faster than the previous version, and is cost-effective for local companies.
“We plan to release custom models more widely in the API over the next few months,” said Sam Altman, CEO and CEO of OpenAI.
According to OpenAI, the company's customers in Japan include large companies such as Daikin, Rakuten, and Toyota Internet. These companies are using ChatGPT Enterprise to automate complex business processes and help analyze data and optimize internal reporting. Additionally, OpenAI's customers include local governments, such as Yokosuka City, which is using the chatbot ChatGPT to improve work efficiency.
Altman visited Japan in April last year and met with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Altman said at the time that OpenAI is considering opening an office in Japan.
With the phenomenal product ChatGPT, OpenAI has become one of the biggest unicorns in the world. In December of last year, there were media reports that OpenAI was in the process of financing negotiations, with a valuation of at least 100 billion US dollars.
OpenAI is looking to add new revenue streams around the world. According to media reports, Altman and OpenAI Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap held product promotion meetings in various US and UK cities this month, and hosted hundreds of top 500 executives to try to sell them products such as ChatGPT Enterprise.
Lightcap said on Monday that customers are in high demand for OpenAI products, and the Japanese market is expected to make a meaningful contribution to the company's revenue in the future.
It is worth mentioning that companies such as SoftBank Group and Nippon Telecom Telephone are also developing AI products for Japanese speakers.
