Insiders At Eversource Energy Sold US$1.2m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

Simply Wall St ·  Apr 13 22:34

Over the past year, many Eversource Energy (NYSE:ES) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest.   When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying versus if they selling is usually more beneficial, as the latter can be open to many interpretations.  However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing,  we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Eversource Energy

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive VP & General Counsel, Gregory Butler, for US$964k worth of shares, at about US$64.25 per share.    So we know that an insider sold shares at around the present share price of US$58.79.  We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us.  In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).

Insiders in Eversource Energy didn't buy any shares in the last year.    The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year.  If you click on the chart, you can see all the individual transactions, including the share price, individual, and the date!

Insider Ownership Of Eversource Energy

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own.  We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership.   Insiders own 0.2% of Eversource Energy shares, worth about US$46m.  This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
