It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Photronics (NASDAQ:PLAB). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

Photronics' Improving Profits

Photronics

Photronics has undergone a massive growth in earnings per share over the last three years. So much so that this three year growth rate wouldn't be a fair assessment of the company's future. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Photronics' EPS has risen over the last 12 months, growing from US$1.81 to US$2.17. There's little doubt shareholders would be happy with that 20% gain.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. EBIT margins for Photronics remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 6.1% to US$897m. That's progress.

While it's always good to see growing profits, you should always remember that a weak balance sheet could come back to bite. So check Photronics' balance sheet strength, before getting too excited.

Are Photronics Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It's pleasing to see company leaders with putting their money on the line, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. Shareholders will be pleased by the fact that insiders own Photronics shares worth a considerable sum. With a whopping US$63m worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. This should keep them focused on creating long term value for shareholders.

While it's always good to see some strong conviction in the company from insiders through heavy investment, it's also important for shareholders to ask if management compensation policies are reasonable. Our quick analysis into CEO remuneration would seem to indicate they are. For companies with market capitalisations between US$1.0b and US$3.2b, like Photronics, the median CEO pay is around US$4.9m.

Photronics offered total compensation worth US$4.1m to its CEO in the year to October 2023. That is actually below the median for CEO's of similarly sized companies. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when it's reasonable, that gives a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.

Should You Add Photronics To Your Watchlist?

As previously touched on, Photronics is a growing business, which is encouraging. The growth of EPS may be the eye-catching headline for Photronics, but there's more to bring joy for shareholders. Boasting both modest CEO pay and considerable insider ownership, you'd argue this one is worthy of the watchlist, at least. Now, you could try to make up your mind on Photronics by focusing on just these factors, or you could also consider how its price-to-earnings ratio compares to other companies in its industry.
