Simply Wall St ·  2023/05/01 08:36

Regular readers will know that we love our dividends at Simply Wall St, which is why it's exciting to see Singapore Exchange Limited (SGX:S68) is about to trade ex-dividend in the next three days. The ex-dividend date occurs one day before the record date which is the day on which shareholders need to be on the company's books in order to receive a dividend. It is important to be aware of the ex-dividend date because any trade on the stock needs to have been settled on or before the record date. Accordingly, Singapore Exchange investors that purchase the stock on or after the 5th of May will not receive the dividend, which will be paid on the 15th of May.

The company's next dividend payment will be S$0.08 per share. Last year, in total, the company distributed S$0.32 to shareholders. Last year's total dividend payments show that Singapore Exchange has a trailing yield of 3.3% on the current share price of SGD9.57. Dividends are an important source of income to many shareholders, but the health of the business is crucial to maintaining those dividends. So we need to check whether the dividend payments are covered, and if earnings are growing.

Dividends are usually paid out of company profits, so if a company pays out more than it earned then its dividend is usually at greater risk of being cut. Singapore Exchange paid out 66% of its earnings to investors last year, a normal payout level for most businesses.

When a company paid out less in dividends than it earned in profit, this generally suggests its dividend is affordable. The lower the % of its profit that it pays out, the greater the margin of safety for the dividend if the business enters a downturn.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?

Stocks in companies that generate sustainable earnings growth often make the best dividend prospects, as it is easier to lift the dividend when earnings are rising. If business enters a downturn and the dividend is cut, the company could see its value fall precipitously. This is why it's a relief to see Singapore Exchange earnings per share are up 8.8% per annum over the last five years.

The main way most investors will assess a company's dividend prospects is by checking the historical rate of dividend growth. Since the start of our data, 10 years ago, Singapore Exchange has lifted its dividend by approximately 1.7% a year on average.

Final Takeaway

Is Singapore Exchange worth buying for its dividend? Singapore Exchange has been generating some growth in earnings per share while paying out more than half of its earnings to shareholders in the form of dividends. At best we would put it on a watch-list to see if business conditions improve, as it doesn't look like a clear opportunity right now.
