Banco De Sabadell Lowers Proposed Job Cuts to 1,440, Averting Strike

Banco de Sabadell SA has offered to reduce proposed job cuts at the bank to 1,440, Spanish worker representatives said Thursday.

The lender had initially aimed at closer than 1,900 dismissals as part of its drive to improve efficiency, Spanish news agency EFE reported in September.

Spanish worker's union Comisiones Obreras said on Twitter that it has decided to call off plans for a strike to protest the cuts and negotiate with the bank. It added, however, that it doesn't consider the proposed reductions are enough.

Banco de Sabadell didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Sabadell is one of several Spanish banks pursuing sizeable reductions in their workforce amid consolidation in the sector and a push to make themselves leaner and more competitive as online banking gains ground.
