The American Advisory Council Consumer Confidence Index declined for the third month in a row in April, falling to 97.0 from 103.1 after a downward revision in March. Despite three consecutive months of decline, the index has fluctuated horizontally in a relatively narrow range and has remained generally stable for more than two years. The current status index fell to 142.9 from 146.8 after the March revision, and the expected index fell to 66.4 from 74.0 revised in March. Expectations below 80 usually indicate an impending recession. Dana M. Peterson, chief economist at the council, said: “As consumers' optimism about the current labor market situation declined and concerns about future business conditions, jobs, and income increased, the confidence index fell further in April to its lowest level since July 2022.”
