The 2024 Global ESG Leaders Conference was held in Shanghai from October 16th to 18th. Lai Xiaoming, Chairman of the Shanghai Environment Energy Exchange, attended and delivered a speech. With regards to the development of the national carbon market, Lai Xiaoming shared three viewpoints: First, it is necessary to coordinate the relationship between the government and the market, leveraging the government's policy-making role while also utilizing the market mechanism's autonomy and innovation. Second, there should be a focus on further enriching the functionality of the carbon market, not just fulfilling a role but becoming a more effective market regulator. Third, there should be an appropriate increase in the financial attributes of the carbon market. While it is important to guard against financial risks, the current financial attributes of the carbon market are indeed too weak and need to be enhanced.
