The US government is in talks with carmakers to promise that at least 40 per cent of cars sold in the US will be electric by 2030, according to people familiar with the matter. These companies say that achieving this goal will require the government to help promote the use of electric vehicles.

UAW spokesman Brian Rosenberg (Brian Rothenberg) said the union was discussing sales targets with the White House and automakers, but had not yet reached an agreement. General MotorsIt also said that no agreement had been reached.

Another person familiar with the negotiations also confirmed that negotiations were under way on sales targets for electric vehicles, but no agreement had been reached and the negotiations were still at an early stage.

Carmakers are seeking government support to achieve these goals, such as subsidies or funding for charging infrastructure, as contained in a bill under consideration in the Senate.

A deal with carmakers could help win support for a $550 billion bipartisan infrastructure deal that passed a procedural hurdle in the US Senate this week. The bill would allocate $7.5 billion to help build a national electric vehicle charging network, which would be almost double all previous investments by utilities, state and federal governments in charging facilities.
