The practice in India has proved that the existing COVID-19 vaccine can effectively protect against Delta virus.

In the latest study, a team led by Nivedita Gupta, the Medical Research Council of India, found that only 0.4 per cent of people infected with Delta novel coronavirus after full vaccination died and 10 per cent needed to be hospitalized.

The team selected 677 clinical cases from 17 states and regions of India. All of these cases were given one or two injections of vaccine. Of those who received two doses of vaccine, 86 per cent were infected with the Delta virus.

The data show that COVID-19 vaccine effectively reduced the serious illness rate, hospitalization rate and mortality rate of people infected with Delta, the study said.

The conclusion of this study in India strongly supports the current academic judgment on the effectiveness of existing vaccines against Delta virus.

Vaccinated people may still be infected with novel coronavirus and transmit it to others, but the vaccine will certainly greatly reduce the chances of severe hospitalization and death, World Health Organization chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan said on Monday.

As the fastest spreading strain of novel coronavirus virus so far, Delta has spread in at least 92 countries / regions, and many countries in the Asia-Pacific region have been forced to restart or extend the blockade.

Goldman Sachs Group analysis believes that because the vaccine can provide protection for severe infection and death from infection.As long as countries are actively vaccinated, the impact of Delta on the economy may be mild, with little impact.
