When asked what message he had conveyed to platforms such as Facebook Inc about novel coronavirus's false information, Biden said: "they are screwing around."
"I mean, they really, look, our only epidemic is in unvaccinated people," Biden said on the South Lawn of the White House. "
Biden responded to earlier comments by White House Press Secretary Pusaki.
"We are dealing with a life-and-death issue, so everyone has to play a role in ensuring that the information is accurate," Psaki said. " "they are a private company. They will decide whether to take other measures. It is clear that more can be done. "
Psaki's comments came a day after she said the Biden administration had pointed out some problematic posts that spread false information on Facebook Inc.
"We regularly make sure that social media platforms are aware of the latest public health comments that we and many other Americans see on all social and traditional media," she said. " "We try to get in touch with them in order to better understand the implementation of the social media platform policy."
One example highlighted by Psaki is the spread of the misstatement that the COVID-19 vaccine can lead to infertility.
"it's disturbing, but we and a lot of people have seen this ongoing narrative, and we want to know that social media platforms are taking steps to address this problem," Psaki said. "this is inaccurate and incorrect information."
Pusaki pointed out that Facebook Inc and other social media services can also take other measures to crack down on false information. This includes publicly sharing the impact of misinformation on its services, promoting high-quality information, and taking faster action on harmful posts.
"everyone knows that information travels fast," she said. "if it's been there for many, many days, when people see it-it's hard to take it back."
Facebook Inc didn't respond to a request for comment.
