The number of job openings in the US is at a record level, but the unemployed do not seem to be in a hurry to find a job, with only about 10 per cent of job seekers actively looking for a new job.
According to a survey by the job search website Indeed, the number one reason why the unemployed are reluctant to look for a job is for fear of infecting novel coronavirus. About 5000 American adults were surveyed between May 26 and June 3.
About 23 percent of respondents said their fear of novel coronavirus made them "in no hurry" to find a job.
After that, economic security is the biggest reason for their lack of urgency in job hunting. About 20.8 per cent of respondents cited their spouse's job as a reason for their lack of urgency; 19.5 per cent said they had a "financial buffer"; and 9.5 per cent said unemployment insurance benefits were the reason they were not looking for a job.
About 18.4% of the unemployed said that the responsibility of taking care of their families made it impossible for them to find a job more urgently.
