U.S. president Joe Biden says the United States will send 20 million doses of FDA-licensed vaccines to foreign countries by the end of June, the first time his government has shipped vaccines that could have been used at home.
Biden said on Monday that he would export 20 million doses of vaccines made by Pfizer, Moderna Inc. or Johnson, excluding the 60 million doses of AstraZeneca he had planned to give to other countries. Currently, the AstraZeneca vaccine is not licensed in the United States.
"it's about doing the right thing, doing the smart thing, doing the strong thing," Biden said. " He said that by the end of June, the United States will be able to receive enough vaccines to vaccinate all its people aged 12 and above.
"the United States will share the additional supply of at least 20 million of these doses with other countries," he said. "
"We will not use vaccines in exchange for help from other countries," he said. "
Biden stressed that these measures are only the first step as the United States turns its attention to containing outbreaks abroad. He also reaffirmed that the United States will soon become the "arsenal" of global vaccine supply.
