Egyptian President Sisi approved a waterway widening plan for the southern section of the Suez Canal submitted by the Suez Canal Authority on Tuesday. The plan is expected to be completed within two years.
Sisi said at the ceremony that the freighter stranded accident in March this year highlighted the importance of widening the southern section of the Suez Canal.
The plan mainly covers about 30 kilometers of waterway in the Suez Canal from Suez City to Great Bam Lake. It will be widened by 40 meters from the previous one, and the maximum depth will be deepened from about 20 meters to about 22 meters. When the plan is completed, it will enable the southern section of the Suez Canal to pass in both directions and improve the efficiency of the canal's traffic.
The Panamanian flag heavy freighter “Changci” ran aground on the new Suez Canal waterway on March 23, causing the waterway to be blocked. After several days of continuous rescue, the stranded freighter successfully surfaced on March 29. In April, the first large-scale suction dredger purchased by the Suez Canal Authority was delivered to widen the southern section of the canal.
