SONY.US has warned that supply shortages of PS5 consoles will persist into 2022, limiting the company's ability to raise sales targets for its latest game consoles.
Sony told analysts after the results were released at the end of April that it was a challenge to keep up with strong demand. PS5 has struggled to find inventory since its launch in November, in part because of shortages of components such as semiconductors. The company has not given an official estimate of when it will resume normal supply. The company reported at the end of April that it had sold 7.8 million PS5 units as of the end of March, while the company aims to sell at least 14.8 million units in the current fiscal year. The cumulative sales of the previous generation PS4 has exceeded 115.9 million.
Sony's chief financial officer said the company does not expect demand to fall easily this year, and even if more components are available and more PS5 consoles are produced next year, supply will not be able to keep up with demand. He said Sony needed to increase production as soon as possible and make sure there were PS5 consoles on store shelves.
While the company is optimistic about demand growth, its latest results show that home demand is leveling off; the number of monthly active users of PlayStation Network fell to 109 million from 114 million in the previous quarter from January to March, and sales of full games fell from the same period last year.
