Royal Dutch Shell CEO Ben van Beurden (Ben van Beurden) said on Sunday that clean energy is expected to make up half of the company's energy mix sometime in the next ten years.
Van Berden said, “If we fail to achieve this process in the middle of the next decade, we will be facing problems not only for companies, but for society as a whole.”
Like other European companies, Shell is determined to become a net zero emissions energy company by the middle of this century. This feat includes producing less oil, more gas and renewable energy, and using hydrogen and carbon sequestration technologies that are still in their infancy. But not everyone is convinced that the energy giant may clash with some shareholders at its annual shareholders' meeting later this month.
“If you want to remove hydrocarbons from fuel blends, you have to act on the use of hydrocarbons, not on the production side,” Van Beurden said. Addressing the challenges of the transition, he said people want results right away, but “don't expect us to stop selling diesel to trucks tomorrow.”
