On Wednesday, MSFT.US won a contract to build more than 120000 custom HoloLens augmented reality (AR) helmets for the U.S. Army, Zitong Financial APP learned. A Microsoft spokesman said the contract could be worth as much as $21.9 billion within 10 years.

After the news, Microsoft shares rose in the short term, Microsoft supplier Intevac (IVAC.US) straight up, once hit a circuit breaker. By the close, Microsoft was up 1.69% at $235.77, while Intevac was up 31.68% at $7.15.

The standard version of HoloLens costs $3500, and people can see holograms overlaid in the real world and interact with gestures and voice gestures. Alex Kipman, a Microsoft technology researcher, previously wrote in a blog post: "the HoloLens-based IVAS helmet, enhanced by Microsoft's Azure cloud service, provides a platform to make soldiers more secure, and the product provides enhanced situational awareness, enabling information sharing and decision-making in a variety of scenarios."

The helmet allows soldiers to fight, drill and train in one system, the military said in a statement. The Army and the Pentagon did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

It is worth noting that the Chinese stocks WIMI.US and MVIS.US, which focus on computer vision holographic cloud services, rose at the same time after the Microsoft news. Traders believe the movements of the two stocks are related to the news. Last year, there were rumors that Weimei might be acquired by Microsoft HoloLens, but Microsoft has refuted the rumors.

By the end of the day, Weimei holographic was up 8.02% at $6.6, while Victoria Images was up 50.69% at $18.55.
