More and more consumers are favoring online shopping, and the health incident pandemic has accelerated this shift in trend, which is most evident in the grocery category. According to eMarketer data, in 2020, online grocery sales in the US will increase by nearly 53%, with sales reaching US$89.22 billion. Compared with the same period last year, this is an increase of US$30.86 billion. The agency expects online grocery sales to reach US$129.72 billion by 2023, accounting for nearly 10% of total grocery sales.
eMarketer predicts that 131 million consumers in the US will buy groceries online this year, an increase of 41.9% over 2019. eMarketer expects this number to continue to grow steadily until the end of the forecast period in 2023, reaching 147.4 million people.
This trend has also prompted retailers to increase delivery efforts and improve the customer experience. In the midst of the pandemic, retailers including Amazon (AMZN.US), Walmart (WMT.US), Kroger (KR.US), Target (TGT.US), and FreshDirect have provided delivery services and expanded online grocery shopping options to meet the growing demand for online shopping.
