CLP (00002.HK) has completed the 'Smart Meter Replacement Program,' connecting over 2.88 million smart meters for approximately 97% of residential and SME customers. Smart meters automatically transmit the latest electricity usage data to the big data platform of the smart grid every half hour via data collectors, eliminating the need for manual meter reading. Employees previously responsible for meter reading have transitioned to backend management of smart meters after receiving on-the-job training.

Lawrence Lo, Senior Director of CLP's Transmission and Supply Business Division, stated that the data collected by smart meters can help teams detect power supply anomalies early or identify affected situations and locations, enabling faster dispatch of personnel to restore power and improving the reliability of electricity supply.

Andrew Loo, Director of Customer Success and Sales at CLP, mentioned that users with installed smart meters can check their electricity consumption, forecast their next bill, and set up alerts for higher-than-usual usage through a mobile app, promoting energy savings. CLP is also collaborating with the Hong Kong Housing Society and several social welfare organizations in a pilot program to analyze electricity usage patterns for elderly individuals living alone and families in need. The system will notify frontline social workers or caregivers when it detects abnormal conditions.

Regarding the implementation of the 'Simplified Housing Ordinance' this month, which mandates the installation of independent meters for subdivided units, Lawrence Lo anticipates that there will be a relatively large number of simplified housing units within CLP’s service area. A streamlined application process has been provided for property owners, and CLP has accumulated coordination experience over the past seven years, having replaced smart meters in more than 20,000 buildings. He believes that both manpower and parts supply are ready.
