Global player spending on mobile games reached $19.3 billion in the second quarter of 2020, up 10.3% from a month earlier and a 27% increase over the same period last year, according to Sensor Tower Store Intelligence.

When the epidemic began to spread in the first quarter of 2020, global player spending on mobile games was $17.5 billion, an increase of 6.7% month-on-month and 16% year-on-year. In the first half of this year, mobile game players' spending peaked in May, reaching $6.6 billion, up 21.5% from May 2019.

As can be seen from the comparison of the two charts of income and downloads, the peak of player expenditure is slightly later than the peak of downloads.

This year, Q1, the number of downloads of mobile games around the world has witnessed explosive growth, reaching 13.4 billion, up 20.7% from the previous month and 38% from the same period last year. Downloads of Q2 mobile games further increased to 15 billion, up 12.7 per cent from the previous month and 45.2 per cent year-on-year. The peak of downloads of mobile games in the first half of the year occurred in April, reaching 5.5 billion.

During the outbreak and the ban of many countries, mobile games with strong social elements have ushered in a sharp increase, such as sandboxie's game platform "Roblox" and Epic Game "Fortnite" for teenagers.

Downloads of mobile games in India increased by nearly 1 billion

In the first half of this year, the top three markets for mobile game downloads in the world were India, the United States and Brazil, where Q2 downloads increased to varying degrees on the basis of Q1.

India entered a blockade at the end of March, with nearly 1.8 billion downloads of mobile games on Q1 and an increase of 50 per cent to 2.7 billion on Q2. The growth rate of the US market is relatively slow, with more than 1.4 billion downloads of mobile games in both Q1 and Q2. The Brazilian market recorded nearly 1.1 billion downloads on Q1, with Q2 growing 9 per cent to 1.2 billion from the previous month. It is worth noting that Brazil's regulatory measures are not as stringent as the first two markets in terms of the scope and duration of the blockade.

As the epidemic broke out in China at the end of January and basically alleviated in April, the number of downloads of Q1 China App Store mobile games reached 743 million, while Q2 fell by 35.8% to 477 million from the previous month.

In the first half of this year, the total revenue of US mobile games in App Store and Google Play exceeded 10 billion US dollars, making it the largest mobile game market in the world. Revenue from mobile games in the United States reached $5.6 billion in the second quarter, up 24.4 percent from $4.5 billion in the first quarter. The Japanese market ranked second with revenue of $8 billion in the first half of the year, with revenue of $4.3 billion in the second quarter, up 13.2% from $3.8 billion in the first quarter. Revenue from App Store mobile games in China reached $6.7 billion in the first half, and fell 8.6 per cent to $3.2 billion in the second quarter from $3.5 billion in the first quarter because the blockade and unblocking were earlier than in other countries.

Q2 Global popular Mobile Games Revenue Top10 in 2020

Tencent "PUBG Mobile" and "Game for Peace" earned nearly $621 million in global App Store and Google Play in the second quarter, down 8% from $674 million in the first quarter, and are still the highest-paid mobile games in the world. Its first-half revenue peaked in March, at $270 million.

Roblox, sandboxie's game platform for young players, is one of the fastest-growing mobile games, with mobile revenue exceeding $302 million in the second quarter, up 58.8 per cent from $190 million in the first quarter. During the global blockade, revenue from the game surged, peaking at $108 million in May, up 188.6 per cent from a year earlier. Niantic "Pok é mon GO" is another mobile game with significant growth. Q2 revenue exceeded $254 million, an increase of 32.7% from the previous month. During the blockade in most countries, "Pok é mon GO" timely adjusted the content of the game to adapt to changes in people's lifestyle and entertainment needs, and ushered in the highest income of the game in the first half of the year.

"Fortnite" iOS Q2 attracted US $146 million, an increase of 110.7% over the previous month and ranked at the top of the App Store mobile game bestseller list. Thanks to the introduction of new Party Royale games and in-game activities such as Travis Scott astronomical concerts, the game has once again broken the circle.

The long-term impact of the epidemic on the hand Tour Industry

The global outbreak of COVID-19 has undoubtedly brought a big wave of dividends for mobile games in the short term, and the downloads and incomes of mobile games under the "residential economy" have ushered in large-scale growth. It is expected that by 2024, the number of downloads of mobile games worldwide will exceed our market expectations before the outbreak. On the revenue side, as the epidemic spreads and the real economy shrinks, we expect mobile game revenue in the next four years to be in line with our previous expectations.
