Tse Chin-wan: It is expected that by 2035, the proportion of electricity purchased from mainland China could reach 60% to 70%.

The Legislative Council's Environmental Affairs Committee held a meeting, during which a legislator predicted that electricity prices will increase rather than decrease in the future, leading to a continual rise in citizens' basic living expenses. The legislator inquired about the authorities’ long-term plans to reduce electricity costs, including purchasing electricity from mainland China. Secretary for the Environment and Ecology, Xie Zhanhuan, stated that there are plans to purchase more electricity from mainland China, with the aim of increasing the proportion of zero-carbon electricity imported from the mainland to 60%-70% by 2035.

Xie Zhanhuan added that there are various financing methods for power supply, and discussions with mainland authorities regarding electricity pricing for Hong Kong are ongoing. Stability, cleanliness, and price competitiveness of Hong Kong’s electricity supply remain key objectives, but details are still under discussion and cannot be disclosed at this stage.

Regarding the electric vehicle charging network, Xie Zhanhuan revealed that the government is open to battery-swapping technology. If it can help expand the adoption of electric vehicles, any technology would be welcomed.
