The Communications Authority has announced the successful completion of the auction for radio spectrum in the 2.5/2.6 GHz band after three rounds of bidding. A total of 50 MHz of spectrum across five bands has been awarded to three mobile network operators, with the total spectrum usage fee amounting to HKD 202 million.
China Mobile (00941.HK) acquired the paired frequency bands 2515-2520 and 2635-2640, with a spectrum usage fee of HKD 40 million; SmarTone (00315.HK) obtained the paired frequency bands 2520-2525 and 2640-2645 as well as the paired frequency bands 2525-2530 and 2645-2650, with a spectrum usage fee totaling HKD 80 million.
Genius Brand Limited, a joint venture between Hong Kong Telecom (06823.HK) and Hutchison Telecommunications (00215.HK), secured the paired frequency bands 2530-2535 and 2650-2655, along with the paired frequency bands 2535-2540 and 2655-2660, with a spectrum usage fee totaling HKD 82 million.
A spokesperson for the Communications Authority stated that successful bidders can utilize the acquired spectrum to continue providing mobile communication services and may also reorganize the spectrum to further support advanced mobile services, including sixth-generation (6G) technology, thereby promoting the continuous development of telecommunications technology in Hong Kong.
