According to a Nikkei interview with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the United States expects to largely complete negotiations with countries that have not yet reached trade agreements by the end of October.
Bessent made these remarks on Thursday, following the formal implementation of a broad range of new tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump. Some key trading partners, including Canada, Mexico, and Switzerland, are still seeking to negotiate more favorable terms with the United States.
Bessent also reaffirmed the importance of the Federal Reserve's independence, but stated that the next central bank governor should be someone who is “very forward-thinking, rather than relying on historical data.” Previously, Trump had expressed his eagerness to replace current Fed Chair Jerome Powell due to disagreements over interest rate cuts.
