① Sales of the Tesla Cybertruck have declined, with only 6,406 units sold in the first quarter of 2025, presenting a very severe outlook; ② Official data from the USA shows that Tesla is the auto manufacturer with the most recalls in 2024, with the Cybertruck being the "problem child" among them; ③ Tesla has launched a lifetime free charging plan and an economy version to stimulate sales, but investors expect a poor outlook.
$Tesla (TSLA.US)$ In the past five years, only one new model has been launched, the electric truck Cybertruck, but the market satisfaction for this auto is not high, which has put Tesla's recent business in a difficult position.
According to two Tesla employees who spoke to the media, the company has lowered its production targets for the Cybertruck over the past few months. Several employees also indicated that Tesla has streamlined some Cybertruck production lines, and some teams have reduced their personnel by more than half.
Additionally, reports indicate that Tesla's Gigafactory in Texas has reassigned some Cybertruck production line workers to the Model Y production line. One employee stated that it feels like they are slowly filtering people out, and the outdoor parking lot has become increasingly empty.
According to data from Cox Automotive, in the first quarter of 2025, Cybertruck sales fell to 6,406 units, down from 12,991 units in the previous quarter. Since production started at the end of 2023, the total sales of the Cybertruck have slightly exceeded 0.046 million units, far below Musk's expected 1 million units.
Quality Crisis
According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Tesla has become the auto manufacturer with the most recalls in 2024, recalling approximately 5 million vehicles in total. Hardware quality issues and software vulnerabilities have become an enduring shadow for Tesla, with the Cybertruck being the model with the most problems.
As of now, in the 15 months since the Cybertruck was launched, it has experienced 8 recalls, the latest of which was due to issues with the vehicle's side panels, resulting in all sold 0.046 million Cybertrucks being recalled.
Despite this, the company's CEO Musk remains optimistic about Tesla's sales, pledging to double the production of Autos in the USA within the next two years. However, the market is concerned about Musk's work with the US government's Efficiency Department, believing that his distraction may turn Tesla's production increase slogan into empty talk.
Nevertheless, Tesla is actively working to make amends. In response to market doubts about the Cybertruck, Tesla recently launched an incentive program offering lifetime free charging to boost Cybertruck sales. Additionally, Tesla released an economic version of the Cybertruck last week, priced at approximately 0.01 million dollars to 0.07 million dollars lower than the original version.
However, some investors believe these promotional measures are not enough to attract sufficient interest. Tesla investor and managing partner of Future Fund, Gary Black, stated that the economic Cybertruck is only priced 0.01 million dollars lower than the regular version and has eliminated many features, so this version will not contribute any incremental effect on Tesla's delivery volume.
He expects that Tesla will only deliver 0.02 million Cybertrucks in the 2025 fiscal year, which is nearly halved compared to 0.037 million in the 2024 fiscal year.
