On March 20, the Financial Association reported (editor: Zhou Ziyi) that Japanese Technology giant $SoftBank Group (ADR) (SFTBY.US)$ $SoftBank Group (9984.JP)$ has agreed to acquire chip design startup Ampere Computing for $6.5 billion in Cash, aiming to expand SoftBank's presence in the field of AI.
This transaction is the latest significant move taken by SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son to realize his AI vision. He has stated that SoftBank will establish a massive infrastructure for AI, including chip design, production, Energy, Siasun Robot&Automation, and Datacenters.
Ampere is a server chip startup founded in 2018 by former Intel president Renée James. It is understood that Ampere produces processors for Cloud Computing and Datacenter applications based on technology from the UK chip design company Arm.
In the industry, Ampere and its chip designer are regarded as a cornerstone in driving Arm's development. Notably, SoftBank holds a majority stake in Arm.
As part of this acquisition Trade, Ampere will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of SoftBank, while still retaining its name; in addition, Ampere's major investors, Oracle and private equity group Carlyle, will sell their holdings in Ampere, and the trade is expected to be completed in the second half of this year.
SoftBank stated, "Ampere will play a key role in the Industry as hyperscale enterprises and Datacenter providers increasingly seek to improve Energy efficiency and reduce costs."
SoftBank's ambitions
In recent years, SoftBank has been expanding its investment in AI infrastructure, including last month announcing a partnership with OpenAI to create enterprise-level AI, jointly developing and marketing advanced enterprise AI named "Cristal intelligence."
In January of this year, SoftBank and OpenAI announced a plan called "Stargate," which reportedly will invest $500 billion to build AI infrastructure in the USA, with the Abu Dhabi National Fund MGX and Oracle also being investors in the project.
Last year, SoftBank also acquired Graphcore, a UK-based chip startup focused on AI.
Regarding the latest acquisition of Ampere, Masayoshi Son stated in a release, "Ampere's expertise in Semiconductors and high-performance computing will help accelerate the realization of our vision and deepen our commitment to AI innovation in the USA."
