The total value of construction work done in 2024 reached RM158.8 billion, with the fourth quarter contributing RM42.0 billion, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin highlighted that the Construction sector continued its strong growth, with fourth quarter of 2024 (Q424) recording a 23.1% increase, driven by Special trade activities (44.9%) and Residential buildings (38.9%). The Non-residential building sub-sector also saw 24.6% growth, while Civil engineering expanded at a slower pace (9.3%).
Breakdown of Q424 Construction Work Done:
Civil engineering: RM15.6 billion (37.2%)
Non-residential buildings: RM11.8 billion (28.0%)
Residential buildings: RM9.9 billion (23.5%)
Special trade activities: RM4.7 billion (11.3%)
The private sector remained the primary driver, accounting for RM27.0 billion (64.2%), with strong gains in Special trade activities (57.4%) and Residential buildings (38.5%). Meanwhile, the public sector contributed RM15.1 billion (35.8%), with moderate growth of 8.8%, supported by Residential buildings (46.8%) and Special trade activities (22.4%).
Selangor Leads in Construction Work Done
Four states contributed 62.3% of total construction value:
Selangor: RM9.4 billion (22.5%)
Johor: RM7.4 billion (17.7%)
Wilayah Persekutuan (Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Labuan): RM4.7 billion (11.3%)
Sarawak: RM4.6 billion (10.9%)
2024 Full-Year Performance
Malaysia's construction sector grew 20.2% in 2024, a sharp rise from 8.4% in 2023. All sub-sectors recorded growth:
Special trade activities: 35.9%
Residential buildings: 24.5%
Non-residential buildings: 15.5%
Civil engineering: 17.3%
Uzir noted that the sector's solid performance was driven by broad-based growth across all segments, reflecting strong demand and expansion in construction activities throughout 2024.
