Fisco Japan ·  Jan 9 15:20

As of the close on the 9th, the number of rising and falling stocks in the Nikkei index constituents was 42 stocks rising, 181 stocks falling, and 2 stocks unchanged.

The US market on the 8th was mixed. The Dow average rose by 106.84 dollars to 42,635.20 dollars, while the Nasdaq fell by 10.80 points to close at 19,478.88. Following mixed results in employment-related indicators, the market was steady after opening. On the 9th, due to the mourning day for former President Carter, the stock market will be closed, and ahead of the upcoming employment statistics release this weekend, there was a leading adjustment selling. Furthermore, selling due to rising long-term interest rates caused a decline. The Federal Reserve Board (FRB) presented the minutes of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting (held in December), indicating that participants expect steady growth, which caused the market to stabilize. Towards the end, the Dow recovered to positive territory, while the Nasdaq ended with a slight decline, resulting in a mixed close.

USA Stocks were mixed, but due to the decline in US tech stocks, the Tokyo market started trading with a slight sell-off. While Advantest <6857>, which had updated its all-time high, sank into negative territory compared to the previous day and semiconductor stocks showed weak movements, the Nikkei Average expanded its decline. With position adjustments due to the US market being closed, there were moments in the afternoon session when the Nikkei Average saw further declines, but after the selling pressure subsided, the extent of the decline reduced.

The Nikkei average at the close was down 375.97 yen (−0.94%) at 39,605.09 yen. The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's Main Board was 1.8 billion shares, with a trading value of 4 trillion 322.6 billion yen. By Global Sectors, Marine Shipping, Wholesale, Insurance, Transportation Equipment, Nonferrous Metals, etc. declined, while only Other Products, Pharmaceutical, and A-REIT ETF increased. The rising stocks on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's Main Board accounted for 20%, while declining stocks were 77%.
