[Afternoon Market Overview]

In the afternoon session, the Nikkei Average started at 39993.72 yen, down 89.58 yen from the previous day, reducing the decline from the morning close (39942.95 yen). During lunchtime, Nikkei 225 futures fluctuated strongly within the range of 39940-40060 yen. The dollar-yen rate remained almost the same as around 9 AM at 158.20-30 yen. In Asia, the Shanghai Composite Index is soft and has fallen about 0.9%, while the Hong Kong Hang Seng Index briefly rose in the morning but then softened to decline by about 1.1%.

In the afternoon Tokyo market, buying was dominant compared to the morning close. Following yesterday's significant increase of over 700 yen in the Nikkei Average, the decline today is viewed as a healthy adjustment within a reasonable range, and an atmosphere of relief seems to be spreading, as the morning session showed a solid tendency for the Nikkei Average. Meanwhile, numerous events are upcoming, including tonight's December ADP National Employment Report in the USA, the weekly new unemployment insurance claims, and the US employment statistics on the 10th, along with the special settlement index (SQ) calculation day for the January stock index options for the Tokyo market over the weekend, leading some to hesitate to engage in active buying.

In the Sector, the Insurance, Other Financing Business, and Securities Futures have the highest rates of decline, while the Marine Transportation, Nonferrous Metals, and Warehousing and Transportation related sectors have the highest rates of increase.
