On Sunday, Eastern Time, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson stated that despite the snowstorm, both chambers of the USA Congress will hold a joint meeting on Monday to count and certify the electoral votes submitted by the states, officially confirming Donald Trump as president.

The National Weather Service indicated that this week, a snowstorm will occur from the central plains of the USA to the eastern states. Severe weather alerts have been issued for the eastern half of the USA, including blizzard warnings for some areas in Kansas.

In the capital of the USA, Washington, the accumulated snow is expected to reach between 3 to 7 inches (approximately 7 to 18 centimeters). This has already caused difficulties for local commuting, and schools, government offices, and businesses may close.

The severe snowstorm weather could cause significant damage to the Washington metropolitan area. Washington has been experiencing mild winters in recent decades and is somewhat unprepared for snow accumulation issues. On Monday, the city has ordered public schools to close. Several counties in suburban Virginia have also announced school closures, and schools in neighboring Maryland may follow suit.

This snowstorm may also disrupt the travel plans of USA Congress members. Fortunately, most senators and representatives have already returned to Washington after the winter holidays last Friday, and Republicans met with Johnson on Saturday to discuss legislative priorities.

On Sunday, Eastern Time, Republican House Speaker Johnson stated in an interview that despite the storm, he still hopes for full attendance at the meeting.

"The Election Count Act requires voting to take place at 1 PM Eastern Time on January 6, so regardless of whether we face a snowstorm, we must ensure voting is completed in that conference hall."

Other leaders also emphasized that they will not consider delaying the congressional certification process due to weather issues.

"The schedule has not changed," said the communications director for Republican House Majority Leader Steve Scalise.

"The Capitol riot" will not be repeated.

In the U.S. elections, the congressional certification process is usually just a formality, but during the last election, this "tradition" was overturned—on January 6, 2020, supporters of Donald Trump violently attacked the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to prevent Congress from formally certifying Democrat Joe Biden's election as President of the United States.
