Source: Tencent Technology 1. Huang Renxun emphasized that generative AI is growing at an exponential rate and that businesses need to adapt and utilize this technology quickly, rather than standing by and falling behind the pace of technological development. 2. Huang Renxun believes that open and closed source AI models will coexist and that companies need to leverage their respective strengths to promote the development and application of AI technology. 3. Huang Renxun proposed that the development of AI needs to consider energy efficiency and sustainability, reducing energy consumption by optimizing the use of computing resources and promoting the inference and generation capabilities of AI models to achieve more eco-friendly intelligent solutions. 4. With the constant accumulation of data and the continuous advancement of intelligent technology, customer service will become a key area for companies to achieve intelligent transformation. 5. According to foreign media reports, at the 2024 Databricks Data + AI Summit held recently, 6. Founder and CEO Huang Renxun had a fascinating conversation with Ali Ghodsi, co-founder and CEO of Databricks. The dialogue between the two parties demonstrated the importance and development trends of artificial intelligence and data processing technology in modern enterprises, emphasizing the key role of technological innovation, data processing capabilities and energy efficiency in promoting enterprise transformation and industry development. 7. Huang Renxun looked to the future of data processing and generative AI in the conversation. He pointed out that the business data of each company is like an untapped gold mine, with tremendous value but extracting deep insight and intelligence from it has always been a daunting task. 8. Huang Renxun also talked about open source models like Llama and DBRX are driving corporate transformation into AI companies, activating a global AI movement and promoting technological development and corporate innovation. Through the collaboration between NVIDIA and Databricks, the two companies will work together to leverage their respective strengths in accelerating computing and generative AI, bringing unprecedented benefits to users. 9. The following is the transcript of the conversation: 10. Moderator: I am very excited to introduce our next guest, a man who needs no introduction, the one and only global rock star CEO - NVIDIA CEO Huang Renxun. Please come to the stage. Thank you very much for coming! I want to start with NVIDIA's remarkable performance, with a market capitalization of up to 3 trillion US dollars. Did you ever think five years ago that the world would evolve so rapidly and present such a remarkable picture today? 11. Huang Renxun: Absolutely! I expected that from the beginning. 12. Moderator: That's really amazing. Can you offer some advice to the CEOs in the audience on how to achieve their goals? 13. Huang Renxun: Whatever you decide to do, my advice is not to get involved in the development of graphics processors (GPUs). 14. Moderator: I will tell the team that we are not going to get involved in that field. We spent a lot of time today discussing the profound significance of data intelligence. Enterprises have vast amounts of proprietary data that are critical for building customized artificial intelligence models. The deep mining and application of this data are crucial to us. Have you also noticed this industry trend? Do you think we should increase our investment in this area? Have you collected any feedback and insights from the industry on this issue? 15. Huang Renxun: Every company is like a gold mine with abundant business data. If your company offers a series of services or products and customers are satisfied with them while giving valuable feedback, you have accumulated a large amount of data. These data may involve customer information, market trends, or supply chain management. Over the years, we have been collecting these data and have a huge amount of data, but until now, we have just started to extract valuable insights from them, and even higher-level intelligence. 16. Currently, we are passionate about this. We use these data in chip design, defect databases, creation of new products and services, and supply chain management. This is our first time using engineering processes based on data processing and detailed analysis, building learning models, then deploying these models, and connecting them to the Flywheel platform for data collection. 17. Our company is moving towards the world's largest companies in this way. This is, of course, due to the extensive use of artificial intelligence technology in our company, which has helped us achieve many remarkable achievements. I believe that every company is experiencing such changes, so I think we are in an extraordinary era. The starting point of this era is data, and the accumulation and effective use of data. 18. The harmonious coexistence of open source and closed source 19. Moderator: This is truly amazing and very much appreciated. At present, the debate about closed-source and open-source models is gradually heating up. Can open-source models catch up? Can they coexist? Will they eventually be dominated by a single closed-source giant? What is your view of the entire open-source ecosystem? What role does it play in the development of large language models? And how will it develop in the future?

On January 6, news emerged that OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman published a New Year's blog post titled "Reflections" on Sunday night, stating that OpenAI knows how to build General AI and is gradually approaching General AI. Prior to this, Altman posted a meaningful six-word aphorism on Social Media X: "near the singularity; unclear which side" — the singularity is near; unclear which side one stands on.

On January 3, another researcher from OpenAI also expressed on Twitter, "I kind of miss the times when we didn't know how to create ASI (Artificial Superintelligence)."

In the past, Altman's statements about achieving AGI were generally confident, but this firm declaration of a clear path to AGI marks a first.

In this blog post, Altman also stated, "We are quite confident that in the coming years, everyone will see what we see."

Therefore, the new meme in the AI industry in 2025 could very well change from "What did Ilya see?" to "What exactly did Sam see?"

Hopefully, OpenAI can provide us with answers in a product form this year.

The following is the full text of the article:

As the second anniversary of ChatGPT approaches, it is necessary to reflect on the past development process, Share some personal insights and experiences learned.

As we gradually approach Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), this is an important moment to examine the company’s development process. Although there are still many areas to explore and many unknown challenges ahead, and we are still in the early stages of development, we know more now than we did when we first started.

Nine years ago, we founded OpenAI because we firmly believe that General Artificial Intelligence is achievable and could become one of the most influential technologies in human history. We were eager to explore how to build it and ensure that it benefits humanity widely; we wanted to leave our mark in history. Our aspirations were very high, and we were confident that this work could benefit society in equally extraordinary ways.

At that time, almost no one paid attention to us, and even if someone did, most thought the chances of our success were extremely slim.

In 2022, OpenAI was still a little-known research lab, and we were working on a project temporarily called "Chat With GPT-3.5." (Our naming capability was far from our research abilities.) We had been observing how people used the playground feature of our API and knew that developers were truly enjoying the process of conversing with the model. We thought that building a demo project around this experience could show people some important insights about the future and help us make the model better and safer.

Eventually, we were fortunate to name it ChatGPT and launched it on November 30, 2022.

We have always known that one day we would reach a tipping point, and the AI revolution would begin. But we did not know what that moment would look like. What surprised us was that the moment turned out to be like this.

The launch of ChatGPT has triggered an unprecedented growth curve within our company, our Industry, and even across the globe. We are finally witnessing the immense potential that AI has always promised, and we can foresee even more developments in the future.

This is not an easy task. The path is not smooth, and the right choices are not always obvious.

In the past two years, we have built an entire company around this new technology almost from scratch. There is no other way to cultivate such talent than through hands-on experience, and when the field of Technology is entirely novel, no one can tell you exactly how to proceed.

Building a company at such a rapid pace with so little experience is a chaotic process. It is often two steps forward and one step back (sometimes even one step forward and two steps back). As we advance, mistakes are corrected, but there is no manual or guidepost when it comes to original work. Moving at high speed in uncharted waters is an incredible experience, but it is also immense pressure for everyone involved. Conflicts and misunderstandings abound.

These years have been the most fulfilling, interesting, exciting, exhausting, and tense of my life, especially the last two years, which have also been the most unpleasant. The strongest feeling I have is gratitude; I know that one day I will retire on a ranch watching plants grow, which might be a bit boring, but I will look back and think about how cool it is that I was able to pursue my dream job since childhood. I try to remember this every Friday before 1 PM, especially when seven things go wrong.

About a year ago, on a particularly memorable Friday, the main thing that went wrong was that I was unexpectedly fired during a video call, and after we hung up, the Board of Directors published a blog post. I was in a hotel room in Las Vegas at the time. That feeling is almost indescribable, like a beautiful dream suddenly turning bad.

Being publicly fired without warning triggered a series of very crazy hours, and extremely chaotic days. The "fog of war" was the strangest part. None of us were able to get satisfactory answers about what had happened and why.

To me, the entire event serves as an example of failure in governance by well-meaning individuals, myself included. Looking back, I certainly wish I could have done better at the time, but I also believe that I am a better, more thoughtful leader today than I was a year ago.

I have also profoundly realized the importance of a Board of Directors with diverse perspectives and rich experiences in addressing a range of complex challenges. Good governance must be built on a foundation of deep trust and solid credibility. Heartfelt thanks to those who work together to build a stronger governance system for OpenAI, enabling us to uphold our mission and ensure that AGI benefits all of humanity.

My greatest takeaway is the deep sense of gratitude I feel and the debt of gratitude I owe to many: thanks to every colleague at OpenAI who chooses to invest their precious time and energy to chase this great dream together; thanks to the friends who lent a hand when we faced crises; thanks to those who support us and trust us to help them succeed; thanks to everyone in life who has shown me care.

We have all returned to work in a more united and positive manner, and I am incredibly proud of the focus and effort we have shown since then. We have completed some of the most outstanding research work to date. Our weekly active users have increased from about 0.1 billion to over 0.3 billion. Most importantly, we continue to bring the technologies that people genuinely love to the world, solving real problems.

Nine years ago, we really didn't know what we would ultimately become; even now, we only have a rough idea. The development of AI has been full of twists and turns, and we anticipate more changes in the future.

Some of these twists brought joy; others brought challenges. It has always been exciting to see a series of research miracles appear one after another, and many former skeptics have become staunch supporters. We have also witnessed some colleagues leave and become competitors. As the company continues to grow, turnover within the team is a common phenomenon, and OpenAI's expansion is very rapid. I believe this is somewhat inevitable—startups usually experience a lot of personnel movement as they reach each new scale, and at OpenAI, the number of employees can grow exponentially within months. The pace of development over the past two years is equivalent to that of a typical company's ten years of growth. When any company grows and evolves at such a rapid pace, interests inevitably diverge. Moreover, when a company is at the forefront of an important industry, for various reasons, especially competitive ones, many people will attack it.

Our vision will not change; our strategy will continue to evolve. For example, when we first started, we had no idea we would need to become a product company; we originally thought we just needed to conduct excellent research. We also did not anticipate needing such substantial funding. Now there are some new things we could not comprehend a few years ago, and there will be new things in the future that we can hardly imagine now.

We take pride in our achievements in research and deployment thus far and are committed to continuing our thinking on safety and benefit-sharing. We still believe that by iteratively and gradually introducing AI systems to the world, allowing society time to adapt and evolve alongside the technology, learning from experience, and continuously making the technology safer, is the best way to ensure the safety of AI systems. We believe in the importance of being the world's leader in safety and alignment research and the significance of guiding this research with feedback from real-world applications.

We now feel confident that, in the way we traditionally understand it, we know how to build AGI. We believe that by 2025, we may see the first AI agents 'join the workforce' and substantially change company outputs. We continue to believe that iteratively delivering excellent tools for people to use will yield widely distributed outstanding results.

We begin to look towards a more distant future, towards true superintelligence. We like our current products, but we come for that splendid future. With superintelligence, we can do anything else. Superintelligent tools can greatly accelerate scientific discovery and innovation, far beyond what we can achieve ourselves, and in turn greatly enhance richness and prosperity.

These sound like science fiction at the moment, and even talking about it seems a bit crazy. That's okay, we have been through stages like this before, and we are also happy to be in such a position again. We are quite confident that in the coming years, everyone will see what we see. And it is so important to be very cautious in our actions while maximizing broad benefits and empowerment. Given the possibilities of our work, OpenAI cannot be an ordinary company.

We feel very fortunate and humbled to be able to participate in this work.
