Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG) Shareholders Have Earned a 22% CAGR Over the Last Five Years

Simply Wall St ·  Jan 1 21:35

The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But on a lighter note, a good company can see its share price rise well over 100%. For instance, the price of Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) stock is up an impressive 169% over the last five years. The last week saw the share price soften some 2.8%.

Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Over half a decade, Intuitive Surgical managed to grow its earnings per share at 11% a year. This EPS growth is lower than the 22% average annual increase in the share price. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth. This favorable sentiment is reflected in its (fairly optimistic) P/E ratio of 82.88.

The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Intuitive Surgical shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 58% over one year. That's better than the annualised return of 22% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. Is Intuitive Surgical cheap compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.
