The S&P 500 Index has risen by 23% this year, far exceeding the average increase of 11% from 2014 to 2023. The three best-performing U.S. stocks in the S&P 500 Index this year are all related to AI, namely the AI software company Palantir (PLTR.US), the energy stock Vistra Corp. (VST.US), and NVIDIA (NVDA.US).
Palantir's stock price was only $17 at the beginning of this year, closing at $75 by the end of 2024, a total growth of 340%, marking the best year since its listing in 2020.
Vistra Corp's stock price soared this year, primarily due to its nuclear energy and Henry Hub Natural Gas capabilities that are essential for AI data centers, making it a key favorite among technology companies and investors. The stock started this year at $38 and closed at $137 by year-end, soaring 258%, making it the second-best performer in the S&P 500 Index.
The third strongest constituent stock of the S&P 500 Index this year is the AI leader NVIDIA, which is also the best-performing stock among the 30 components of the Dow Jones, having increased by 171% for the entire year.
